Land usage classification of La Palma before (August 2021) and after (November 2022) the volcanic eruption
These images illustrate the impact of the eruption on inhabitants of the island with the amount of crop land (seen in dark green on zoomed in image) and residential areas (seen in yellow on zoomed in image) consumed by the lava flow (seen in red). 7,000 people (8% of the total population) had to be relocated and 9 million euros in damage was caused by the volcanic event.

Temporal change of lava flow growth using Maximum likelihood of La Palma Island September 2021 to December 2021. (Purple is 2021 fresh Hawaiite flows) (Red is Tephrite-Basanite flows) (gray is ash)

ASTER Thermal image highlighting the lava flow on September 30th, 2021.
ASTER Thermal image highlighting the much larger lava flow on October 16th, 2021.

Updated geologic map of La Palma Island showing extent of flow and new terrain added to coastline, 2006 map shown on the right with our updated 2022 map on the left. Lava flow was detected using maximum likelihood classification to identify new flow.
